Painting Italy now 27% funded!

How about that? Just one week and a few days after launching my kickstarter project I am nearly 30% of the way to my goal- woohoo! I'm getting so excited for the trip and the painting process and have started making lists of the things to take- thankfully I have all my art supplies and it's just a matter of bringing the bare essentials (after whittling down the must-have list some more!). I am allowed one checked bag that weighs no more than 50 lbs, and one carry-on not more than 22 lbs. It's a good thing summer clothes are light!

Artistic Exploration of Italy

If you've been following my website at all, you know that I no longer have the paint-your-own pottery shop, but continue to paint and teach classes. I am excited to have more time to focus once again more fully on my own painting, and with that in mind I have an exciting plan for the summer!

On July 26th I will be leaving for a 2 week trip to Italy to make a life-long dream come true and paint in Italy! I will be traveling with my 16 year old daughter, Abbey, and together we will explore the sights, sounds, tastes and relationships that make Italy so special.

We will be visiting 5 towns/cities and I plan to do 14 paintings during this trip- of everything that in my mind is quintessentially Italian. We will visit Rome, Florence, Siena, Lucca and Naples. I'm sure we will hit some other places along the way, but those are the ones where we will stay at least a night or 2.

When we return I will be working on making larger paintings from the small studies I will do there and putting together enough to do a show all about the experience. I would love it if you would join me in this journey of a lifetime. There will be ways for you to support this trip and own some of the artwork created from it as it continues to evolve, so stay tuned!

Fingerprint Valentine's Day Card

Happy Valentine's Day! I know I've fallen down on my job to Blog and show you fun kid's crafts as well as new art, but what can I say, life happens! Anyway, here is a fun, easy and sweet way for your kids to make their own Valentine's Day cards. Just a couple of steps and you're done. Enjoy!

1. Fold card stock (cut if necessary to fit an envelope you have if you plan to mail it)

2. pour out a small dab of tempera or acrylic paint onto a paper plate- white + red makes pink, or just use pink or red. Other colors are fine too- message hearts are lots of colors, right?

3. have your child dip their index finger or thumb into the paint and press it onto the card stock.

4. Have them re-dip the finger and press it down again overlapping the bottom of the first print and angling it out to the side a bit at the top- see the heart shape?

5. Repeat as desired- do lots of cards if you like! Clean off the fingers with a damp paper towel between colors.

6. Let dry and draw around the hearts if you like with marker or crayon.

What is it? Doodle Waiting Game

Here is a fun game I played with my kids whenever we had to wait quietly somewhere. All you need is something to write with and something to write on. The first person begins with a simple doodle. The next adds to the doodle (or with 2 players finishes it). The only limits are your imagination and whatever rules you decide to impose. Here are 2 samples that show how the image evolved with the first, second and final doodles. Have fun!

Tissue paper flowers...

Using tempera or other washable paint-mix 2 light-ish colors for the flowers. ( It's ok to add white, but don't use more than 2 other colors or when mixed together you will have brownish flowers!) Paint on hands and press onto card stock or paper plates. Overlap palm print and face fingers the opposite direction for second handprint to complete flower. Let dry and add marker or crayon to center and to outline. Try cutting them out and hanging from a string in a hole punched through the top for a cheerful, moving spring display!Send me a photo of your child's creations and I will post them here!

Kid Craft- Valentine Pop-up card

What you need: Plain white card stock; colored construction paper; glue stick; markers, crayons or colored pencils.
How to do it: 1. Fold a piece of card stock in half.
2. Mark 2 parallel lines in approximately the center of the card about an inch apart and cut on them.
3. Fold this section to the inside and crease the 2 folds.
4. Fold a section of a colored piece of construction paper along one edge- make this folded section about 2 1/2 inches wide.
5. Draw 1/2 of a heart so the center of the heart is on the fold, then cut on the line. Make the widest part of the heart no more than 2" from the fold.

6. Using a glue stick, glue the left hand side of the heart to the left-hand side of the small inside fold you created in the card. Close the card to make sure the heart doesn't stick out.
7. Use markers, colored pencils or crayons to add words or designs to the heart and inside of the card.

8. If desired, glue another piece of colored construction paper on the outside of the card to hide the cut-out piece of the pop-up and decorate that.

Crayon muffins

Crayon muffins are a fun way to use up old, broken crayons and make way for those new boxes that arrived with the holidays!
Line muffin tins with metal liners. Let the kids peel off ALL of the paper anf break the crayons into pieces small enough to fit into the muffin cups. Sort the colors by color family and place in the muffin cups. Remember- it wont' make mud if you keep the colors related: blue/yellow/green; blue/red/purple; red/yellow/orange; white/gray/black; brown/tan/yellow.
Of course pinks go with any reds and peaches with any yellows- you get the idea! Sorting is half of the fun to see how many ways you can get similar colors together. This re-inforces the color-family idea. These are also known as analagous colors. Make sure not to over-fill the liners. Half-full or less is best.
Next, place the muffin tins in the oven at about 300 degrees F.-It won't take more than 5 minutes and maybe less depending on the brand of crayons and how full the tins are, so keep your eyes on it. Take them out when the colors are melted. Let cool completely. Let the kids peel off the liners and have some crazy, coloring fun with your recycled crayons! These are great for coloring large areas, making backgrounds and for use with small hands.

Chocoate Truffle Cookies

By popular request, here is the recipe for the cookies I made for the Mansfield Downtown Holiday Mingle last weekend. They are perfect for a cookie exchange because they make so many (you might even have some to keep!)
Enjoy!
Chocolate Truffle Cookies
Beat together: 1 1/4 c. softened butter, 2 1/4 c. confectioners sugar, 1/3 c. baking cocoa powder. Stir in: 1/4 c. sour cream, 1 Tablespoon good vanilla extract.
Stir in: 2 1/4 c. general purpose flour.
Mix in 2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Refrigerate for 1 hour. Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees F.
Scoop dough into 1" balls and dip tops in chocolate sprinkes (you will need approximately 1/4 c. of sprinkles for all of the dough). Place on ungreased cookie sheets about 2" apart and bake for 10-12 minutes or just until set. Let cool 5 minutes then remove to rack and let cool completely. Makes approximately 5 1/2 dozen yummy, fudgy cookies!

Tie-dye snowman Project

Here is a new spin on a snowman- tie-dye! It's non-staining when you use washable markers , so set the kids loose with newspaper on the table and let them go nuts.

Start with 3 coffee filters,trim 2 so you have 3 sizes.
Let the kids scribble! Spray with water until the colors blend.
Move to paper towels to dry.

Viola! Tape together and add construction paper or use markers for

details. Use trim pieces for arms. Mount to cardstock for more

stability. Have fun!

Thanksgiving Kid's Craft

Here is a fun, inexpensive way to let your kids have a roll in preparing for the big Thanksgiving Feast. Have them make placecards for each person coming to the meal. You will need cardstock, acrylic craft paint and markers or colored pencils. For best results have them practice a bit on scrap paper until they get the hang of it. Acrylic paint is NOT washable, so be sure and cover the work surface and put them in play clothes.

Start with a piece of cardstock and cut it into 3 strips approx. 2.5" wide. Cut each strip in half- about 4.25". Fold these in half so you can see your work area. Dip thumb into brown paint and press sideways on bottom area of card. Leave room for the feet below thumbprint. Repeat with pinky, but press down vertically and overlap the thumbprint.

This is what it should look like:

Next use markers or colored pencils to scribble vertical, fanned-out feathers. Add a pinky-print of lighter brown on "face" and color in red legs and feet with a marker or colored pencil.
When the paint is dry add a yellow beak and red waddle with paint (try using a toothpick to dab on the paint). Use a black marker to add eyes and the name.

Display your placecards with pride!

Leaf Collage- photos

Here is another fun and easy fall project. Make a leaf collage to bring the fall colors inside!

1. Start with a simple frame like a "clip frame" (shown here) or a poster frame. You want one where the glass or plexi and backing board will be held tightly together to keep the leaves from moving. If you choose a box frame you will have to tape it together when you're done.

2. Next collect and dry a variety of leaves.

3. Place white paper on the backing board and begin to arrange the leaves. Add and overlap them until you are happy with the arrangement. Try and put different colors next to each other so they all show up to their best advantage.

4. Put the frame back together and enjoy your new art creation!

Helpful Hints: Don't press too hard with the crayon. Use the side of the crayon. Use medium to dark colors so they show up- don't be afraid to use more than one related color(see color mixing on previous post!). Hold paper and leaf still with your other hand while you rub. Have fun!

Fun Fall Crafts

Wondering what to do with all those lovely leaves? Do a leaf rubbing: Place a dry leaf on paper. Place another piece of white paper on top of the leaf. Use the side of a crayon to work from the center of the leaf out towards the edges and rub the crayon gently over the leaf. hold paper and leaf still with other hand. It will pick up the high spots on the leaf and show the veins, texture and shape of it. Use all the fall colors and try different leaves. You can overlap them on the same page, or make one page for each and try and collect one leaf from all of the trees in the neighborhood!

Make your own scratch art

Here are some process photos for making your own scratch art- from scratch! For best results use smooth cardboard and acrylic craft paint from a bottle. The brand of crayons doen't matter, but Crayola does have great colors. Light colors show up the best. Make sure to let the acrylic paint dry completely before trying to scrape it off with the paperclip. If you make a mistake and scratch off too much, just paint over it!

Color mixing

Several people have asked me about how to help their children be more successful when they set out to paint. I think the easiest way is to only offer 2 primary colors of paint and white. Then they can mix to their heart's content and it will be beautiful. Next time, give them a different set of primaries. For example, red, plus yellow will get you orange, and with white: peach, rose, cream, salmon, etc. Yellow plus blue will get you: green, yellow-green, turqoise, celery,.... Last but not least, is red plus blue: purple, fuschia, raspberry, mauve, ..... One word of caution, red is a very potent color, so a little goes very long way.

Now, anytime you mix all 3 primary colors, you will end up with some version of brown or gray. more red= brownish, more blue=grayish. When you are ready, try to make as many different variations of brown/gray that you can-this can be a fun project all on it's own!

One last thought- if you start with a secondary color- let's say green, and add the 3rd primary- in this case red, you will also get brown/gray. These colors are called compliments or opposites because they are opposite each other on the color wheel.Try it! It works for any of the combos.

A whole year...

I can't believe a whole year has passed ( and then some) since my last post. I appreciate the feedback on these abstracts. I have gotten back to my more realistic roots since then and have been doing portraits and landscapes. Right now I am in the White Mountains of NH and plan to do a series of mountain-scapes. I will attempt to post these as they are done. Be creative!

So, the departure continues as I work on focusing in on just color, composition and texture. I am testing my own boundaries as well as those of the medium and learning where to maintain control and where to let it go. I am also working on trying to pull out the essence of the inspirational reference, and communicate that essence less literally. I feel each successive painting does that a little bit better.

I am having a blast and am excited to get my hands on the various textures of paint to see what I can do with it! Here are 2 more abstract paintings in acrylic, based (although more loosely) on the same walls as the first 2, but with a more hopeful feel...

As promised, here are my newest pieces. I just finished them today, and they are quite a leap for me, in subject, style and medium. They are done on board, with a thick layer of textured underpainting, followed by multiple layers of acrylic paint. I will varnish them after they have sat for a couple of days with a satin varnish so they won't be too shiny. They are loosly based on the texture of 100 year old interior walls that had exposed brisk, lathing and plaster.

I am currently working on some large ( for me) abstract pieces in acrylic on wood panels. I was inspired by the interior walls of a very old building being re-purposed into offices and condos. They had plaster, layers of paint, lathing and brick work all in the same areas and the texture was amazing. I will post the work as I finish it, or perhaps in process for your input!

Here is a photo of a charcoal painting I just finished. It is from a black and white photo from about 50 years ago. The photo was 2"square, so finding the details was a challenge. The family loved it and said I really captured the likenesses, especially the man- he passed away a number of years ago. I call it "Young Love" and I just love the woman's expression. Here is the finished family portrait that I did on the 300 lb. watercolor paper with a watercolor underpainting. I just love how vibrant all of the colors are!
Next time I do one like this I will show it in stages. I forgot to take pictures of this one along the way.

Hello there!

I have been working on pastel portraits of children, adults and pets, so that has kept me very busy. I discovered that using 300lb ( very heavy) watercolor paper and doing a light underpainting is a great base for pastel portraits. I had used some pastels on top of watercolors in the past, but never to this extent, and I was a bit concerned about obtaining the level of detail I wanted on the rough paper, but so far it is going very well. ( I will post the finished product next week)

I will be having surgery on my right shoulder in just over a week, so will most likely not post for a while, but wanted to catch you up on my latest endeavors. I hope to be back in the studio by March 6th, but will be in a sling ( so not painting) until about the 17th. Seems hard to imagine, but since I am having a bone graft in my clavicle, it will need time to heal. Yes, I am right handed- ugh!

I would love to hear your opinions about my new work and suggestions for new things. I will have new Fairy paintings up by Feb. 23rd. on my website, so check them out!

Time Flies!

At long last- hello again! I can't believe 2 weeks have gone by since I posted. Life is hectic- good but crazy! I did paintings of 2 apple orchards and they are selling prints and cards for me, I did cat portrait ( she is pretty cute and I'll put her on here next), and in addition to painting local scenes for a note card series, I am also working on water/marsh scenes to go in a gallery that will be opening soon. I need a body of work that is uniquely mine and not on commission. Sounds easy- paint what I like anything at all-yippee, right? Wrong! I get all twisted up and can't see if it's good or bad, done or incomplete. When it's for someone, the rules are clearer and the goal defined. See what I mean? So, I will take some photos of these things later and get them up here so you can offer your opinions- really, all opinions accepted (I'll try hard not to take it too personally, truly I will!)
So- that is it from here, you are all caught up on what I am doing ( in addition to keeping up the house, food, laundry, kid's schedules and teaching group and private art classes that is!)

I had a really great time talking to everyone.

Summer art classes for children

Here is the schedule for summer classes for children ages 7 and up. All classes will meet outdoors around Mansfield, MA , weather permitting, and will meet at ARTWORKS in the case of bad ( or too hot) weather, where we will paint from a still life that the students will decide upon. Classes are 4:15-5:45 pm and on Wed. & Thurs., except for Session 2 which will meet on Tues./Thurs. We will meet at different places each week, so students taking more than one session will have different subjects to paint. Fees are $68 for each 4 class session, and includes all supplies.
Session 1: June 28, 29, July 5, 6
Session 2:July 11, 13, 18, 20 (Tues./Thurs.)
Session 3: July 26, 27, Aug. 2, 3
Session 4: Aug. 9, 10, 16, 17

Here it is! The new class schedule for children:
Teens: Mondays 2:15-3:45 pm April 24- May 15
Ages 7-12: Multimedia on Tues.'s 3:30-5 pm April 25- May 16
Watercolor on Thurs.'s 3:30-5 pm April 27- May 18

I am finishing up several paintings, a window mural and a program in the public school starts today. I am going to get the schedule for the next session of children's classes up here by the end of this week. Please check back! Busy with new paintings!

Well, I have been busy these last 2 weeks. I completed a small First Communion Portrait that will also be reproduced as bookmarks for the guests at the reception after the ceremony.
I also did a painting at the Attleboro Museum Annual Flower and Art Show this past weekend. Now to get it framed!
I finished a beach painting of a tropical island that includes the husband and wife that commissioned it, enjoying the view of the clear turquoise water and each other’s company. Fun!
I will get the photos on here ASAP so you can see!

Early Release Day Pizza and Pottery!

All 6th through 8th graders are invited to register for this Friday's ( Feb. 17th) Pizza and Pottery at Artworks! Come in right from school and enjoy pizza ( pepperoni or cheese) a drink, and dessert with your friends. Then paint a piece of pottery and relax for a total of 3 hours. $12 each covers the food, studio fee and hang-out time. Price of pottery not included, and prices start at $6. Here are some pictures of me doing the demonstration this morning at the Norton Library in Norton, MA, and the resulting painting of a sunset on Cape Cod. It was fun, and I love the end result. This was completed in about an hour and is 16" x 18" .

Adult Classes in watercolor have started, but it's not too late to join in the fun! We meet at kristi johnston ARTWORKS at 263 N. Main St. Mansfield, MA every Tues. morning from 9-11, and every Wed. night from 7:30-9:30. It is a small, supportive and creative group that will welcome newcomers and help nurture YOUR creative side! Make this the year you do something for yourself!

I provide individual, customized instruction so you can grow and explore at your own pace. It doesn't matter if you have no experience at all, have done art all your life, or are somewhere in between. The fun and joy are in the playing!

Fees are as follows: $16 with your materials/ per class or $95 for a session of 7 classes, $20 with my materials/per class or $125 for a session of 7 classes. With this option, I provide absolutely everything you need! You just show up.

Another note, thanks to enrollment of a few kids that came to the demonstration on Sat., I now have enough children to have a Sunday afternoon class beginning this Sunday Jan. 22 from 3:30-5pm! I am very excited to start with a new group of kids. Watercolor is so much fun!

Watercolor Demonstration
Well, I did the watercolor demonstration of an ocean scene at the Mansfield Library yesterday and it went very well. There were over 20 kids and adults there, and everyone seemed to enjoy watching me turn the white paper into a view of a rocky New England shoreline. I have a few more things to do to it before I will call it done, but I here it is so far.
     I had several parents interested in signing up their children for classes, so I may be able to fill that Sunday afternoon class after all! I heard many complimentary comments on the display I had put up of artwork by children in my previous classes, and that made me feel good.
     I was so excited to see my friend Charlene McNeil at the demonstration. She was there to take photos for the newspaper!  I hope at least one gets into the Mansfield News, since that may help fill the classes, too.
     Trying to get the word out about my watercolor paintings, art, and classes for ages 5 and up has proven to be a challenge.  Overall, I don’t think that newspaper advertising works. I have started an advertising campaign with a coupon mailing service, and I have seen some measurable results from that. I also give out coupons to current customers to encourage them to come back, and to tell a friend.
     I have moved the children’s watercolors to a display case in the Norton Library, and I will do a demonstration there next week. I think I might do a companion piece to the one I did yesterday, then write a press release saying that they are on display together!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am trying to put together a Sunday afternoon watercolor class for children ages 7 and up. Is there anyone interested in that? I am running a special deal - 5 classes for the cost of 4, and the children are invited to bring a friend to the last class. It is $68 and includes all the supplies. Beginners are welcome. This is my first experiment with pre-tinted watercolor paper. I like the glowing effect that the bare paper gives this piece. I called it "Boston Glow" Let me know what you think!

Success!

Hurray! I finally grabbed the time to paint this image of the Boston Skyline. I titled it "Boston Glow". I love the color of the paper showing through and being the main color of the sun-lit side of the buildings. I used peach-tinted watercolor paper- my first time with that, and I think I will use it again. I like how it handles the paint, and the underlying glow is lovely and doesn't grey down the blues too much.
On another note, I had enough pottery to run another kiln load tonight, and I just emptied it yesterday, so that is good! This load had all of the pieces the women painted from Norton Women of Today when they came for an evening out.

I scheduled several appointments today to help children at local day-care centers to do hand and foot prints on plates for Mother's Day- it is so much fun to see the end result!

Overall, I feel I am moving forward with all of my marketing campaigns, and my painting too!

Inspired, busy, but no new art yet.

Well, despite my best intentions, I have yet to complete a painting that is worthy of sharing. I have accomplished lots of indirectly art-related things though! I am working on marketing, a re-design and up-date of my web-site and letting my painting ideas "cook" a bit.

I enjoyed a wonderfully inspiring watercolor demonstration this evening and am feeling geared up now! All of the children's and adult's art classes I teach in my studio started back up this week, so that gives me something to focus on. I am still looking for 2 students age 7 or older to join a Sunday Afternoon watercolor class from 3:30- 5 pm, beginning Jan. 22. Please contact me for more information or to register.

I am getting mentally preparing to do a free demonstration of my own this Sat. from 10:30-12 at the Mansfield Library. Adults and children ages 5 and up are invited to attend, and I will share some fun techniques!

As soon as my ideas for paintings turn into the real thing, I will put them up! Please feel free to comment on what is up so far.

Happy New Year!!!
Well, I didn't get any painting done this weekend, but I did have fun with our friend Beth, went to a fun New Year's Eve Party with the whole family, shopped, made a dress for my 11 year old for her role as Glinda in Wizard of Oz, and helped my 14 year old bring her unique dress design closer to reality. So, it wasn't quite what I hoped to get done, but it was a successful weekend anyway. I will get some painting done tomorrow and post the results when I am done!

Thinking about the New Year

Thinking about the New Year ahead inspires me to put brush to paper and get some new pieces out of my head and into reality. I am going to do 3 small pieces this weekend. One will be the hips, leaves and branches from the apple tree next door, another will be the shadows on the snow and the grasses in a yard near by, and the last is a Boston sky-line scene that has been in my head for weeks. Check back on Monday to see the results!

This watercolor on hand-made paper is my neighbor's Burnese Mountain Dog, he is such a big teddy bear of a dog! The rich texture of the paper really helped capture his fluffy coat.

     Adult Classes resume week of Jan. 9th Tues. am 9-11, Evening classes will begin with a field trip to Foxboro Art Association on Wed. Jan. 11 at 7 pm to see a wonderful watercolor demonstrator, Paul George. Any who want to come see are welcome. The fee is $5 for a great demo!  Regular classes will begin Wed.
